PASSING THE TORCH

Earlier this year, the CCAA honoured the most accomplished hockey program in its first fifty years. Through the course of the CCAA National Hockey Championships, the distinction would be associated with five different programs.

Following a runner up finish at the inaugural nationals to the Camrose Lutheran College Vikings, the St. Clair College Saints of Windsor, Ontario with Jerry Serviss at the helm completed a perfect season capped by a national title in 1976 and laid claim to the distinction for the first of two runs. The Saints would place first once, second once and third twice in four appearances at nationals.

The College of Cape Breton Capers of Sydney, Nova Scotia with Dr. Carl "Bucky" Buchanan coaching made their fourth consecutive appearance at nationals in 1978 to earn the distinction for the first of two occasions. The Capers would finish first one time, second one time and third three times in twelve appearances at the CCAA National Hockey Championships.

The Red Deer College Kings of Red Deer, Alberta with Al Ferchuk behind the bench won their second national title in 1979 and started their first of two reigns as Canada's most accomplished college hockey program.  The Kings would make six appearances at nationals with three championships and three runner up finishes.

The NAIT Ooks of Edmonton, Alberta with Perry Pearn guiding became the most recent team to hold the distinction when they won a best of three series at nationals in 1990.  In seven appearances at the CCAA National Hockey Championships in nine seasons, the Ooks won nationals on five occasions and wound up third on one occasion.

In addition to NAIT being recognized as the most accomplished CCAA hockey program to date, Serviss, Buchanan, Ferchuk and Pearn are members of the CCAA Hall of Fame.

As of now, a massive void exists in the CCAA Hall of Fame with no hockey players and no hockey teams receiving calls to the Hall.
