ATHLETES UNDERREPRESENTED IN CCAA HALL OF FAME

Whether it's by decade, by sport, by geographic location or by sheer numbers, athletes (including hockey players) are under represented in the CCAA Hall of Fame.

Nineteen athletes from the first four decades of competition are in the CCAA Hall of Fame. Of those, only three competed in the first decade. The majority of athletes who competed in the CCAA's first decade are now at least 60 years of age.

Of the athletes who have participated in team sports that culminated with a CCAA National Championship, only men's hockey has no athlete representation in the CCAA Hall of Fame. Basketball, soccer and volleyball are each represented with athlete inductees from both men's and women's competition.

Of the athletes who have participated in a tournament sport that concluded with a CCAA National Championship, only badminton players have received the call to the CCAA Hall of Fame.  Cross country runners, curlers and golfers have not been so fortunate.

Of the 100 plus post secondary institutions to be members of the CCAA since 1974, 15 have athletes enshrined in the CCAA Hall of Fame. Five of the 15 have more than one inductee. None of the 16 athletes from team sports and none of the three athletes from tournament sports hail from post secondary institutions that were not a member in good standing at the time of the entry.

Of the nine provinces which sent athletes to CCAA National Championships, four -- Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan -- have no athlete, coach or builder inductees in the CCAA Hall of Fame. Nova Scotia has a lone athlete among its four inductees in the CCAA Hall of Fame.

In most multi sport halls, athlete inductees are in the majority and represent a broad range of sports. Of the 123 inductees in the Canada West Hall of Fame, 82 are athletes (from 10 different sports), 13 are teams (from six different sports) , 17 are coaches and 11 are builders. Of the 56 inductees in the CCAA Hall of Fame, 19 are athletes (from four different sports), 16 are coaches, and 21 are builders. As of now, a team category is missing from the CCAA Hall of Fame.

The composition of inductees speaks volumes about the legitimacy of a sports hall of fame.
