SAIT Wins Third Straight ACAC Hockey Title
| |
| | |
|
|
The SAIT Polytechnic Trojans are the third team in ACAC men's hockey history to win a third straight league championship. The Trojans captured their 10th league title by winning the best of five final series with the Mount Royal College Cougars three games to two. (The NAIT Ooks began a four title run in 1984 and and a three title run in 1990.)
On Friday, March 13th at the SAIT Campus Centre in Calgary, a pair of powerplay goals proved to be the difference as the Cougars doubled the Trojans 4-2. Brennan Chapman, Jeremy Robinson, Sawyer Eichel and Matt Lamriande tallied for Mount Royal. Marco Guercio scored both SAIT goals.

Kyle Gladue also pocketed a pair for the Trojans while Jon Malin, Sean Bassingwaithe, Jason Gray, and Shane Lust added singles. Luke Scheuer and Dustin Kimber bent the twine twice for the Cougars while Ernie Stewart, Matt Lamirande, and Coleton Thielmann each lit the lamp once.
On Friday, March 20th at the SAIT Campus Centre in Calgary, Marco Guercio's marker with 11 seconds left in regulation gave the Trojans a 5-4 victory over the Cougars. Ryan Hyland, Shane Lust, Kyle Gladue, and Kevin Lessard rounded out the scoring for SAIT. Jeremy Robinson completed the hat trick for MRC and Coleton Thielmann added a single. |
|
On Saturday, March 21st at Calgary Centennial Arenas in Calgary, Jeremy Robinson completed the hat trick and Jordan McLaughlin turned away 34 shots to record the shutout as MRC blanked SAIT 3-0.
On Sunday, March 22nd at the SAIT Campus Centre in Calgary, Jon Malin's powerplay marker with 6:34 elapsed in the third vaulted the Trojans to a 1-0 victory over the Cougars. Reese St. Goddard made 23 saves in posting the shutout.
SAIT head coach Ken Babey, who leads all ACAC coaches in games coached and coaching wins, now holds two more league records -- most first place finishes (8) and most league championships (7). |
