| 2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Vikings are eager to move up in the standings. Ex Utah Valley University Wolverine (ACHA) Colin Stebner and ex Estevan Bruin (SJHL) David Ritz are two new faces in the Vikings crease. Netminder Kirk Laird, back for his third season with the Vikings, will also see action. On the back end, fifth year veteran Tyrell Shepherd will be paired former Neepawa Native (MJHL) Ryan Cornforth early in the season. Up front, returnees Tyler Bellamy and Chris Dawn are leading by example. Ben Starbuck, who played with the North Country Community College Saints (NJCAA) in 2007-08, is one of the few fresh faces on a squad with 18 players back from last season. |
2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Clippers have 15 veterans in the fold. Goaltending appears to be one of the team’s strengths with Shane Marsh returning for a fifth year and Jesse Chenard entering his first campaign after playing for the Bonnyville Pontiacs (AJHL) last season. Defensemen Thomas Koshman, Josh Dueck, Justin Simpkins, and Josh Gustafson are back. Aaron Frede, formerly of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL), is one of the newcomers on the blueline who will make an impact. The Clippers will have a balanced attack up front with Benji Gustafson, Chris Tendall, and Linden Wilcock among the returnees. Ex Winkler Flyer (MJHL) Michael Falk and ex Swan Valley Stampeder (MJHL) Jon (Kyle) Dyck along with Mike Rempel, a former member of the Burnaby Express (BCHL), are first year players expected to add to the offensive arsenal. |
2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Thunder have 16 players back. Justin Cote, formerly of the Winnipeg South Blues (MJHL), and Dan Pennock, formerly of the Edmonton Royals (CJHL), will handle the netminding duties along with returnee Dorin Gay. Veterans Jason Fleury, Stephan Tonowski, and Filip Lund give the Thunder some depth on the blue line. Ex Lloydminster Bobcat (AJHL) Andrew Willgar and ex Bonnyville Pontiac (AJHL) Tyler Ferbey are noteworthy back end additions. Kyle MacDonald, a right winger from the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL), and Andre Herman, a left winger from the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL), are two of four new faces up front. Niklas Virta returns to the Thunder forward ranks after a season ending injury prior to the start of the 2007-08 campaign. Veterans MacKenzie Groenewgen and Leath Gare are expected to make big contributions to the offensive attack. |
2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Griffins have nine players returning. Netminders Shannon Szabados and Brandon Parenteau are both back. Ex Swan Valley Stampeder (MJHL) Mark Aubuchon is also vying for ice time in the crease. The defensive unit is strong and experienced with a pair of transfers from Concordia – Kiel Sonne and Mike Copeland -- joining returnees Russ Purdy and Chris Giacobbo. Two new defensemen, Jesse Klym from Vermilion and Artem Zemelyev from the Ukraine, have shown promise in the preseason. Up front, a number of vets are in the lineup including Dan Waschuk, Chase Campbell, Andrew Nelson, Jordan Stevenson and Tyler Hennessey. Fraser Regan, who did not play last season, is also back in the fold. Of the newcomers, ex Beaumont Chief (CJHL) Rene Tessier, ex Vermilion Tiger (NEAJHL) Jared Crooks and ex Bonnyville Pontiac (AJHL) Greg Doll, have great potential. |

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS
(39th season in ACAC Hockey) |
NAIT OOKS
(44th season in ACAC Hockey) |
PORTAGE VOYAGEURS
(1st season in ACAC Hockey) |
SAIT POLYTECHNIC TROJANS
(44th season in ACAC Hockey) |
| 2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Cougars have ten players back from last season. In the crease, both Steven Houghton and Zak Smith return. Former Viking Archie Henderson will also be competing for time between the pipes. The Cougars will be very young and skilled on defense with Matt Lamirande, Jason Harding and Jesse Griffith back. Joe Vetere from the Calgary Royals (AJHL) and Jared Collister from the St. Albert Steel (AJHL) are two of the rookies expected to adapt quickly to the ACAC game. Tim Callaghan, Josh Zimmer and Jeremy Robinson are among the veterans back up front. Sawyer Eichel, formerly of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL), and Coleton Thielman, formerly of the Langley Chiefs (BCHL), will be rookie forwards to watch. |
2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Ooks have nine familiar faces in the lineup. Former Vikings Travis Ziegler and Richard Hankinson along with Anthony Heuer, formerly of the Melville Millionaires (SJHL), will take turns between the pipes. Rearguards Brad Sinclair and Nick Stermer are both back for their second season. Ex Drumheller Dragon (AJHL) Adam Gialet and ex Kelowna Rocket (WHL) Kevin Reinholt are key additions to the blueline corps. The Ooks appear to be solid offensively with Jeremy McKibbon, Jeff Topilko, and Bret Peppler returning. Eric Sonnenberg is back with NAIT after playing four seasons of pro. Former U of A Golden Bear (CWUAA) Chevan Wilson will be a player to keep an eye on. |
2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Voyageurs are in their inaugural ACAC season and could easily dampen the post-season aspirations of the more established teams. Newcomers Paul Kolida, formerly of the Victoria Grizzlies (BCHL), and Evan Kurylo, formerly of the Grand Forks Border Bruins (KIJHL), will be battling for ice time in between the pipes. One of the biggest challenges for Portage will be defense. Former Griffin Chris Hollens, a natural forward, is the only player on the roster with ACAC experience. Ex Kerrobert Tiger (SWHL) Craig Settee will be a steadying force on the blueline, while former Fairview King (NPHL) Jarvis Ducharme is making the transition to defenseman from forward. Up front, the Voyaguers will present a balanced attack. Three forwards have NCAA Division II experience -- Jeremy Weasel Moccasin with the Eastern Washington University Eagles (ACHA), Chris Glen with the Utah Valley University Wolverines (ACHA) and Brent Caldwell with the North Country Community College Saints (NJCAA). |
2008-09 Prognosis: |
The Tojans are defending back-to-back ACAC champions. SAIT is strong in net with a pair of goalies back from last season -- Reese St. Goddard and Landon Kroeker. The SAIT defense will feature a mix of youth and experience. Brock Michalsky, Kirk Deeg, and Blair Gray return. Of the newcomers, Thane Wood, formerly of the Brooks Bandits (AJHL), and Clayton Goodall, formerly of the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL), have been impressive so far. The Trojans are in a rebuilding mode up front. One of last season’s lines remains intact with Shane Lust, Kevin Lessard, and Kyle Dorowicz back. Former Pensacola Ice Pilots (ECHL) Blake Robson and Mike Ullrich are two of the top recruits. |
